In Hollow Knight: Silksong’s case, the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct cake was somehow not a lie

You ween’t dreaming. Hollow Knight: Silksong really did show up at yesterday’s Nintendo Switch 2 Direct! It was a very brief cameo, but by skong, people said, we’ll take it.

So, we now know it’s coming to Switch 2 at some point in 2025, but as of recently the chances of actually getting any info about Team Cherry’s highly-desired game on April 2 seemed like they were totally random. That is, unless you bought into a theory based around cake that surfaced back in January, and continued to believe even when the devs themselves looked to have poured water on the speculation fire.

Yep, in a very Silksong twist, the fan theory that sprung up around some Team Cherry dev comments on a recipe for Brooklyn Blackout Cake listed on the website of food outlet Bon Appetit has actually turned out to be on the money cameo date-wise.

As a quick recap, folks had spotted comments seemingly from Team Cherry art director Ari Gibson and game designer William Pellen – programmer Jack Vine also appears to have gotten in on the act – on this random cake recipe that happened to have been posted on April 2, 2024. You can probably see what kind of speculation this led to, but if you can’t, yesterday’s Switch 2 Direct took place on April 2, 2025.

After that naturally caused a hype overload among info-hungry skongers, Silksong marketing and publishing manager Matthew ‘Leth’ Griffin appeared to have ruled out these cheeky comments actually being a tease of a Switch 2 Direct cameo or release date announcement, with a tweet insisting “the cake is a lie”.

It wasn’t though, as April 2 came and boom, there was Silksong in the Direct. Cue Reddit posts declaring “THE CAKE WAS REAL!!!!”, as those who kept on believing take their victory lap. Also, a fresh comment posted 13 hours ago on the cake recipe from an account with the handle ‘A_TRUE_SKONGER’ reads: “The cake turned out very well! Thank you for the amazing recipe!”

You love to see it. What does this mean in terms which wacky theories you should buy into when the skongers start itching for a release date more specfic than just the year 2025? We’ve got no skonging idea.

Did you never doubt that the Hollow Knight: Silksong cake theory would actually be right about something deliciously skongy coming out of the oven on April 2? Let us know below!
