Bad news, Titanfall fans: EA’s latest staff cull has killed an unannounced Titanfall-themed extraction shooter that was in development at Respawn

EA is back at it again, laying off hundreds of staff across the company including roughly 100 at Respawn Entertainment. On top of these cuts, the publisher has cancelled some in-development projects, including what was reportedly going to be a new Titanfall game.

Initially reported on by Jason Schrier at Bloomberg, sources speaking to the outlet who were familiar with what was going on stated that between 300-400 staff in total have been impacted by these cuts. Reaching out to EA for comment, a spokesperson for the company told Bloomberg the following,

“As part of our continued focus on our long-term strategic priorities, we’ve made select changes within our organisation that more effectively aligns teams and allocates resources in service of driving future growth.” Following this, Respawn Entertainment posted its own lengthy statement publically addressing the layoffs. In it, the company confirms it has had to make “targetted team adjustments across Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi”.

In addition, the statement confirms Respawn had to cancel two “early-stage incubation projects”. Respawn was sure to mention that those staff impacted would be offered “meaningful support”. Further reporting around this announcement by Bloomberg has revealed that one of these games – codenamed R7 – was a Titanfall themed extraction shooter. This comes only a few years after another Titanfall project was cancelled in 2023.

All this, of course, while EA executives continue to make ample bonuses. As noted by Eurogamer back in 2024, those on the highest rungs of the company made 60 million dollars collectively amidst layoffs.
