While the world waits for Borderlands 4, one hero is trying to get forgotten MMO Borderlands Online playable again

While the world waits anxiously for the release of Borderlands 4, one dedicated fan has taken it upon themselves to explore an entry in the series you may not have heard of. Borderlands Online, the cancelled Chinese-only MMOFPS! While the game isn’t entirely playable quite yet, good progress has been made.

But who is making this progress? Well, one game designer and dataminer by the name of EpicNNG posted a video of the Borderlands Online character creator on their Twitter account recently. In this video, you can see her go through all four of the MMO’s classes and mess about with the cosmetic appearance of their Vault Hunter a little.

EpicNNG has also indicated that the work actually getting any form of Borderlands Online playable will be quite the task, posting “Since servers are dead, I think I’ll go for the name “Borderlands Offline”. It will also need uncapped FPS, FOV Changes, Translating to English, and hopefully that’s it. I guess you could say it needs a… Redux?” As of right now, once you actually create a character you get trapped in an endless loading screen, so we’re still a ways out from seeing actual gameplay from this long dead MMO.

It’s a shame too, becuase Borderlands Online looked to have some real quirks and potential to it. Announced as a Chinese only MMO back in 2014, it would soon after be cancelled as 2K China closed its doors. Even so, there is gameplay you can watch if you’re curious on what it was actually like, though obviously it’s a touch dated at this point. Still, an interesting adventure through the series’ past – you’ve got to remember that Borderlands 2 is one of the best selling games of all time. There was a real potential for the series to explode outwards across the world back then.
