Baldur’s Gate 3 gets a glorious send-off following its final update on PC, as players wonder “what’s next for Larian?”

Baldur’s Gate 3 has seen a fresh surge of players following its final major update, patch 8, as Larian fully moves onto to development on new ventures.

As seen on SteamDB, the game saw a growing concurrent player count following the release of patch 8 on April 15, hitting a new peak on Sunday as folks enjoyed a run through the game over the Easter weekend. It maxed out at roughly 169,000 adventurers, which isn’t too shabby whatsoever for a game that’s nearly five years old. This figure doesn’t take into account console players too, which we can only assume came back to the game upon hearing the news that the game is finished.

This update came alongside a blog post from Larian, thanking players for their support over the years. “You’ve helped us make BG3 a bigger success than any of us could’ve ever hoped for, and that passion could keep us tweaking things and making changes until the end of time. But then we’d never be able to create something new.” The company also confirmed that while things like bug fixes may still be coming, major additions such as narrative content or changes to storylines will not be coming.

With patch 8, the game recieved a photo mode, crossplay support, Steam trading cards, and loads of new subclasses. Shout out to Giant Barbarian, which has kept me company over the weekend. It allows characters to throw weapons imbued with elemental damage which return to your hands on-hit, as well as the ability to throw objects and creatures of medium weight and lower. Lobbbing greatswords for massive damage and suplexing dwarfs off cliffs is a great send off for the legendary RPG, in my humble opinion.

The question left in fans’ heads is what’s next for Larian? The studios has likely been chipping away at something new for some time now, but there’s no word on what it is as of writing. Baldur’s Gate 3 has obviously set a daunting bar for quality, but given the significant success of the game and the financial cushion it has provided, it’s safe to say Larian should be good to grind away at its next thing for some time.
